2022/23 Homeschool year begins! And just like that our 8th year of Homeschooling is here! Many parents that have homeschooled for years question whether or not they should homeschool in high school. The best advice that I can give is to remember your “why” and plan from there. There are so many ways and methods to support homeschooling, that you will surely find what’s right for your family. This year along with taking online live classes, CLEPs, classes at ASU, me teaching subjects, and in-person electives; we found a new homeschool community in ATL where they will take classes. Checking “feeding a goat” off my bucket list 😆! Feeding an Argon oil tree goat in Morocco was so surreal. I knew we were going to see goats in trees but there were REALLY goats in trees! Fun fact: the goats graze both beneath the tree and up in its aerial leaves. Argon oil accounts for up to 84% of their diet. So many unique experiences with Women Travel Abroad. My mom signed me up and forced me to come was the answer my spirited daughter gave when asked what made her join the Women in Technology (W.I.T.) job shadowing program 😆. Summer is great for exploration- says me! After Day 1 she got in the car with all smiles! It was then that, I knew I had forced my teen to make a good decision to give 1 week if her life to explore the tech industry. But really if she didn’t have smiles I would have still felt good lol. This week was one of the longest weeks of my life! And the first thing Karlond said to me when I laid eyes on him was, “Mommy I wasn’t ready to come home.” I’m not gonna lie, I almost lost it 🥹!! But then I was flooded with feelings of happiness-just looking at his excitement. Civil Air Patrol camp gets rave reviews! Highlights of camp were getting Honor Guard Cadet of the Day and getting to fly in a UH-60 Blackhawk & a C17 Globemaster. Civil Air Patrol is the best kept secret that we want to tell everyone about. The program has grown Karlond’s leadership skills, given him cool community service opportunities, & allows him to explore air-space-cyber education. Annual Testing is done! Both children are thrilled to be done, but one can't stand me taking pictures...can you tell who that is? We've homeschooled in 3 different states, and testing requirements were different in each state. In Georgia, you are only required to test your homeschoolers every 3 years after beginning in third grade. My student's test every year. It's one of the tools I use to help gauge where they are academically so that we can focus on enrichment during the summer. For the last 7 years, we have used paper testing. I believe it's good practice for the SAT and ACT. But since both are moving online very soon, next year we may do online/computerized annual testing. By 2024 the SAT will be entirely online! Our homeschool year is almost over! If you ask me, the benefit and burden of homeschooling is that you can homeschool almost anywhere-time-or place but that may not be in-line with the rest of the world’s schedule. Summer activities and camps have begun. So now our schedules have more play than work, but we still have to push to the finish. And that means schoolwork on the weekends. I remember a time when my kids would complain about schoolwork on the weekends or summer enrichment studies during the summer, but understanding the benefits helped. And because they've consistently done it over the years, their mindset has changed and it’s just the work! I truly believe that some subjects just deserve more time. Guess who passed his 1st college CLEP!? The home proctoring program is a bit intense but so worth it. Last year I wondered if my students could start earning college credit. So I picked up a book called Homeschooling for College Credit. This book left me swimming in options and inexpensive ones at that. CLEP was the 1st option that we tried and it was very so comprehensive. So proud of my 15yr for always being up for the challenge. BOOK REVIEW 📚! This historical reader was phenomenal! A strong spunky 10yr orphan who’s named after the type of plantation she works on. Post Civil War America (1800’s) and slavery ending hasn’t seemed to change much. Chinese workers are brought in to harvest the sugar cane. Older plantation workers are wary about losing their jobs. Sugar bridges the community of strangers. Her eyes have always yearned to see a bigger world. And now her new friendship with the Chinese workers open her mind even more. I love historical fiction because it really helps kids to make a connection. It gives readers an insight to what people felts and did in the past society. Played hookie and had fun on our boat excursion! We took advantage of 1 of the benefits of homeschooling- allowing school to fit into life. And so glad we did! Not only did we get p.e. time but we also spotted cool sea life. Hurricane Olaf made us reschedule our tour and the new date was on the same date the kids had live class.
